18 Common Skincare Ingredients You Should Know.

The beauty industry has no shortage of new and innovative products, most notably skincare products. While we rely on word of mouth and social media for most recommendation for good products, we must do our best to educate ourselves able what we put on and, in our bodies.


I have compiled a list of 18 common skincare ingredients and what they are most used for. Understanding what they do will help determine if they are right for your skins needs.



1. Hyaluronic Acid: A hydrating ingredient that helps retain moisture in the skin, making it plump and smooth.



2. Niacinamide: Also known as vitamin B3, it helps improve the skin's barrier function, reduces inflammation, and regulates oil production.



3. Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant that brightens the skin, evens out skin tone, and boosts collagen production.



4. Vitamin A: Also known as retinol, it helps stimulate cell turnover, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and improves skin texture.



5. Ceramides: Natural lipids that strengthen the skin's barrier, preventing moisture loss and maintaining hydration.



6. Retinol: A form of vitamin A that promotes collagen production, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and improves skin texture.



7. Glycolic Acid: An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the skin, improves skin tone and texture, and reduces the appearance of fine lines.



8. Lactic Acid: An AHA that gently exfoliates the skin, promotes cell turnover, and helps with hyperpigmentation and acne.



9. Azelaic Acid: Helps reduce inflammation, unclogs pores, and fades hyperpigmentation and acne scars.



10. Squalene: A natural moisturizing ingredient that hydrates and softens the skin without clogging pores.



11. Bakuchiol: A natural alternative to retinol that helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improves skin elasticity.



12. Collagen: A protein that helps maintain skin's elasticity and firmness, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.



13. Ferulic Acid: An antioxidant that enhances the stability and effectiveness of other antioxidants, such as vitamin C and E.



14. Tretinoin: A prescription-strength retinoid used to treat acne, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin texture.



15. Kojic Acid: Helps lighten hyperpigmentation, age spots, and melasma by inhibiting the production of melanin.



16. Peptides: Amino acids that help stimulate collagen production, improving skin elasticity and reducing wrinkles.



17. BHA/PHA: Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) and polyhydroxy acid (PHA) exfoliate the skin, unclog pores, and help with acne and blackheads.



18. L-ascorbic Acid: A stable form of vitamin C that brightens the skin, reduces hyperpigmentation, and boosts collagen production.
